Update on Paedriatric Health and Safety Training

When a parent leaves their child in the care of your nursery, they are placing their trust in you to ensure that their child comes to no harm. Does your nursery have the best First Aid provisions in place to provide parents with the reassurance they need?

To serve as a reminder of the importance of First Aid, Joanne and Dan Thompson, who lost their nine-month-old daughter in a choking incident at nursery, have set up the charity Millie’s Trust. The aim of Millie’s trust is to make First Aid training available to everyone – no matter who you are or what your financial situation is.

The launch of Millie’s Mark

This month, Millie’s Trust has taken things one step further in helping to improve the First Aid provisions of nursery providers by launching Millie’s Mark – an official accreditation and special endorsement that is awarded to nursery providers in England whose staff have ALL been trained in Paediatric First Aid care.

The guidelines set out by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) currently state that at any childcare setting in England only ONE person is required to hold a current Paediatric First Aid certificate – they must be on the premises and available at all times when children are present. Like many other parents, Joanne and Dan do not believe this is a sufficient and hope that Millie’s Mark will encourage nursery providers in England to go above and beyond the minimum requirements.

The benefits of having a team who are 100% trained in Paediatric First Aid are obvious but as a nursery it shows that you are putting the children first and doing everything you can to ensure that they will all receive the maximum Paediatric First Aid care possible, as soon as possible, should it need to be administered.

Choosing a provider

When it comes to choosing a First Aid provider, Millie’s Mark do not have a preferred supplier for Paediatric First Aid, with nurseries free to choose a provider of their choice.

If you’re a nursery looking for a Paediatric First Aid provider in and around the Warrington and Manchester areas then we have the right skills for you, we run regular accredited Paediatric First Aid Level 3 public courses. Meeting Ofsted and EYFS requirements, the public courses are available to schools, nurseries, pre-schools and small groups, as well as individuals such as self-employed childminders. Everyone is welcome!

Alternatively, we can arrange to deliver our Paediatric First Aid Level 33 course in your workplace to groups of 6 or more. We can run the course at a time to suit your needs, whether that’s during business hours, on an evening or a weekend.

The Effectiveness of Defibrillators During CPR

It’s worth understanding what a defibrillator is and why it used in cases of heart attacks to bring the heart’s rhythm back to normal.

Public access defibrillators (PADs) are usually found in public areas such as gyms, shopping centres and gyms.

The Defibrillator is easy to use

Great thing is you don’t need any training and it will actually give spoken instructions.

Every second counts

After a cardiac arrest, every minute without CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and defibrillation reduces someone’s chance of survival by 10 per cent.

When you call 999, the operator can tell you if there’s a public access defibrillator nearby. Don’t delay or interrupt chest compressions to get it, send someone else.

If you’ve installed a defibrillator in your community or workplace, check that your ambulance trust knows about it. That way, 999 operators can quickly identify a nearby device in future emergencies.

How to use a defibrillator

Defibrillators are very easy to use. Although they don’t all look the same, they all function in broadly the same way.

If you come across someone who is not breathing or breathing erratically, the most important thing is to call 999 and start CPR. If you’re on your own, don’t interrupt the CPR to go and get a defibrillator. When you can, send someone else to find one. Once the defibrillator is open, all you have to do is follow the spoken instructions.

There’s lots more information about obtaining and using defibrillators in the Guide to Defibrillators we produced in conjunction with the Resuscitation Council UK.

Funding for defibrillators

Our Nation of Lifesavers Community package offers part funding for a public access defibrillator and Call Push Rescue training kit.  You can find out more about the application criteria and how to apply online.

We also provide funding for community first responder schemes.

The Department of Health Defibrillator funding programme in England has now closed. Due to a high demand in applications we have now allocated all the funds available.

Understanding First Aid Training & The Many Benefits

It is so important to understand the benefits for First Aid Training in our day to day life, the statistics are unbelievable. 150,000 people a year could be given a chance to live if more people knew first aid.

Thousands of people are dying each year in situations where first aid could have made the difference. This includes nearly 900 people who choke to death, 2,500 who asphyxiate from a blocked airway and 29,000 who die from heart attacks.

First aid could make a dramatic difference in these situations, either through direct intervention, in the case of choking, or by recognising life-threatening signs, such as a heart attack, and caring for someone until medical help arrives.
Some research by SJA revealed that:

Nearly two-thirds of people (59%) wouldn’t feel confident enough to try to save a life
A quarter (24%) would do nothing and wait for an ambulance to arrive or hope that a passer-by knows first aid.

Too little too late…….

We at Healthsafe Training will be running offers every month in differant areas and levels of skills around first aid in an attempt to try and encourage people to do what they can, when they can.

Anything is better than nothing. Let’s reduce those statistics through teaching and spreading the word, we can save lives throughout Manchester and Warrington.

Resuscitation Decision Making

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Not everyone wants to receive attempted CPR, so it is important to respect people’s wishes and to make sure that they are offered a chance to make choices that are right for them.

When someone suffers sudden cardiac arrest due to a sudden problem with their heart, immediate CPR can offer a chance of restoring them to a length and quality of life that they value.

When someone’s heart and breathing stop because they are dying from an advanced and irreversible condition, CPR will subject them to a vigorous physical intervention that deprives them and those important to them of a dignified death. For some people this may prolong the process of dying and, in doing so, prolong or increase suffering.
